DARLINGHURST
Darlinghurst is a Golden Guitar Award winning act from Melbourne VIC, Australia. Originally a four piece, it was announced in December 2023 that they were moving forward into 2024 as a duo; comprising original members, Cassie Leopold and Pagan Newman.
Darlinghurst created a new sound in the Australian country sphere that is as accessible as it is unique. Grounded in refined songwriting, a keen ear for melody, relatable lyricism and exceptional performances, Darlinghurst has broad appeal that has been reflected in the success to date.
Their debut album, “Darlinghurst”, entered the ARIA Australian Country Albums Chart at Number One, earned them the Golden Guitar Award for New Talent of the Year in 2022 and have played major festivals and support to some of music’s biggest names including The Corrs, The Black Sorrows and Jon Stevens.
The first taste of the new Darlinghurst arrived on January 5 2024 with the single, “Unapologetic”. Co-written by all four original members along with producers, M Squared. The song is uplifting and anthemic while capturing a whole new feel that is surprising yet exciting – it was a sure fire hit that pleased the loyal Darlinghurst followers and capture the hearts of new fans with the song hitting Number 1 on the Countrytown/Radio Monitor Hot 50 in February 2024.
May 2024, a new chapter arrived with the girls signing to Nybor Records.
Pagan and Cassie again turn the tables with “Gypsy Girl” - the yin to “Unapologetic’s” yang. The song switches lanes into a stripped back bluegrass arrangement complete with lush instrumentation and joyous harmonies. It speaks of freedom and allowing life to take you where you need to be.
“The girl who is not bound by the conventions of traditional society. Gypsy Girl serves as a reminder to all the power of individuality and the beauty of a life lived on one’s own terms”, says Cassie Leopold.
A beautiful blend of early Dixie Chicks and 1970’s West Coast folk rock à la Fleetwood Mac, The Mama’s & The Papa’s and Joni Mitchell – “Gypsy Girl” was recorded at Ziggy Tone Studios in Melbourne under the guidance of Damian Cafarella (The Pleasures, Henry Wagons, Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes). While some may say that in itself is a left field choice, it was one that immediately struck the right balance in capturing not only the pure essence of the song but one that has reignited the girls’ fire for their music. Cafarella produced and mixed the track and played all guitars, mandolin, dobro and sang backing vocals. The gorgeous instrumentation is fleshed out by Luke Moller (Dolly Parton, Lana Del Rey) on fiddle and Michael Carpenter (Michael Carpenter & The Banks Brothers) on upright bass.
“Gypsy Girl” will make you fall in love with the music of Darlinghurst all over again.
